Eldene Pearl Abbott was born August 7, 1923, the daughter of Harry & Mildred Peterson. She passed away on Friday, January 02, 2014 at the Denison Care Center at the age of 91.
Eldene was born in Woodbine, IA. She attended school until the 8th grade at the Charter Oak, Dist. #5 of Hanover Township and graduated in August 1937. On August 31, 1944 she was united in marriage to Leonard Abbott. Eldene was a lifelong member on the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak. She was a member and strong supporter of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 30 years.
Eldene was a very determined person and spoke her mind freely. Growing up, she loved to wear the color pink and was soon nicknamed “Pink”. She was an avid baker creating many homemade pies, desserts, sugar cookies and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, which her grandkids all loved. Eldene enjoyed bowling, playing cards, sewing and crossword puzzles. She was involved with many civic and volunteer groups within the Charter Oak community. In 1977 she was part of a community group that helped establish the Charter Oak Senior Center where she served as the First Vice President. Later she was the Senior Center Meal site manger in Charter Oak for many years. Eldene also pursued a dream of owning and re-opening the former drive-inn on Hwy 141 in Charter Oak that was known as Abbott’s Drive Inn. Eldene was best known for driving several bus routes for the Charter Oak-Ute community school district. Her most memorable driving trips were taking the high school marching band to several of their competitions and parades.
Eldene was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband Leonard in 1979. She is survived by her sons Robert Abbott (Katheryn) , Eugene Abbott , Kevin Abbott (companion Michelle), two brothers, Walter Peterson (Lola) , Dale Peterson (companion Gloria) , 8 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
