Carl Aarstad Family

In 1912 a twenty year old farm boy from southern Norway set out for Watertown, S. Dak. He left behind all members of his immediate family and with a spirit of adventure headed for the New World and what Carl said was "shirt-tail" relatives in S. Dak.

Carl found work in a blacksmith shop in Watertown and learned the trade. In Watertown he married Rena Anderson, daughter of Norwegian immigrants. The young couple moved to Willow Lake in 1920 and began the Aarstad blacksmith shop.

Carl's early days were filled with shoeing horses, fixing wagons, setting wheels and other forge work. His shop was located directly west of where Pat's car's now operate.
At one time Carl was the distributor for John Deere Equipment. As Carl recalls his years in the shop he said, "I remember how hot it was in the dry years. One May it was a hundred all month, you could sweat a lot." One other memory Carl vividly recalls "the shop covered; clear covered with plow lays."

Carl sold his shop in 1971 after fifty one years in business in Willow Lake.

Edited from A HISTORY OF SOUTHERN CLARK COUNTY AND SPIRIT LAKE 1976 The book is not copyrighted.
