Leslie Marvin Smith, 74, of Carmichaels, died at 9:11 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born November 26, 1926, in Garard's Fort, a son of Leslie Cleveland and Gracie Ellen Stansbury Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1944 graduate of Mapletown High School and was a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels. He had been a member of the church choir and served as president of the board of deacons. Mr. Smith was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 8461 of Waynesburg, the Carmichaels and Cumberland American Legion Post 400, and Trea at Oakdale. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater during World War II. After the war he was stationed at Wiesbaden, Germany. After his discharge from the Army Air Corps, Mr. Smith enlisted with the U.S. Army Reserves. He was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis and afterward served at Fort Lee, Va.; at Fort Meade, Md.; at Butzback, Germany and at Fort Dix, N.H. Mr Smith then taught ROTC at Duquesne University for two years before a tour of duty in Korea at Fort Ord, Cal. and Nuremberg, Germany. He retired from the service at Fort Meade as a senior master sergeant, E-8. Mr. Smith then did civil service work at Fort Meade and later at Oakdale until retiring in 1988. His wife, Ruthella Shimek Smith, whom he married in 1949, survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Jo Ellen Mozingo of Springfield, Va., and Leslie Ferrari of Bowie, Md; two grandchildren, Matthew Mozingo and Christina Ferrari, a brother, Wayne E. Smith of Garards Fort; a sister, Alice Aaron of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death a by a sister, Mary Olive Flint.
