PERRY - Nina Rogers Harper, 95, died Tuesday March 23, 2004 at a local hospital. Graveside Services will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Ed McMinn officiating.
An Eastman native and daughter of the late John Thomas and Annie (Hargrove) Rogers, "Miss Nina" moved to Perry in the early 30's where she met and married (39 years) Louis "Smokey" Harper who preceded her in death in 1978. Collectively, they were co-owners of Edwards-Harper Company for over 45 years.
Mrs. Harper was well known for her philanthropic spirit. A lifelong volunteer, "Miss Nina" was a Charter member of the Pink Ladies at the Perry Hospital from opening day in March 1969 to the remarkable age of 89 in 1997. Her appointment to the original downtown Beautification Committee for the City of Perry; serving as their chairman for two years and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Houston County Council on Aging (Meals on Wheels) from 1987 to 1996 was just part of her outstanding service. For many years, she was the Memorials Chairman for the local chapter of American Cancer Society and was a charter member of the Georgia National Fair volunteers, The Firecrackers.
In 1978, she was honored as the Pilot's Club, "Woman of the Year" and in 1987 received the "Outstanding Community Service Award" from the Perry Rotary Club. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Sorosis Club and Book Browsers.
Mrs. Harper was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church where she was the first woman to be appointed to the position of Trustee of the church in 1986.
She is survived by 12 nieces and nephews: Jack Abney, Jo Ann Peche, Carol Fordham, all of Cochran; Jim Rogers of Somers CT; Lawrence Rogers of Johnstown, PA; Nelle Shelton, Robert Tuggle Jr., and Nina Rogers, all of Perry,; Charlie Harper of Warner Robins, Judy Long of Atlanta, Mary Ann Corbett, Lynn Harper; and sister-in-law, Mary Harper, all of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by a host of great nieces and nephews.
