Ilmi A. Aalto, 65, retired mechanical engineer, formerly of Seattle, died in a Tacoma hospital early today after an illness of several months. He had lived in Tillicum, Pierce County, since 1958.

Mr. Aalto worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in many parts of the Pacific Northwest before his retirement. He saw duty with the Navy's 82nd Construction Battalion in the South Pacific during the Second World War. He was in the Army here during the First World War.

Mr. Aalto, born in California, spent much of his early life in Douglas, Alaska. He attended high school here and was graduated in 1921 from the University of Washington. He worked for the Boeing Airplane Co. before the Second World War.

Survivors are his wife, Lorraine, and five sisters, Mrs. Robert Bonner and Mrs. Horace Plumb, both of Seattle; Mrs. Alex Demos and Mrs. Edward Bach, both of Douglas, and Mrs. Hilda Helmes, San Diego.

The Issaquah Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
