SFC William F. Brown of Barrow, Alaska was a graduate of Mt. Edgecumbe High School and received an extensive education through the military. He served from August 1976 until the time of his death and had been an infantry team leader on missions in Panama, Japan, Bosnia and Afghanistan. During his 30 years of service, he received more than 15 military awards and six awards from the State of Alaska. Mr. Brown worked for the North Slope Borough, City of Barrow and Arctic Slope Native Association. He also served as councilman for the City of Barrow from 1980 to 1986 and from 1990 to 1993. He enjoyed being a whaling crew member. He was preceded in death by his biological mother, Orella Brown; father, Harvard Brown; brothers, Robert, James and LeRoy Brown; and sister, Doreen Sue Charles. William died a few miles east of the Perry County line on Highway 98, when the humvee he was in was struck by an 18-wheeler. Brown has served nearly 30 years in the National Guard. He was most recently serving as an infantryman but had previously served as an avionic mechanic and administration specialist. He'd earned two Army commendation medals and two National Defense Service medals, among others. He worked in the civilian sector as a postal clerk in Barrow.
