Shirley Ann Aabel, 87, formerly of Hastings, died in Tulsa, OK on Sunday, August 2, 2015. Visitation will be Thursday, September 10, 2015, 5-7 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Hastings. A memorial service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 11th at the First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Fellowship Hall.

Shirley was born on September 28, 1927, in Bladen, Nebraska, daughter of the late Claude and Bernice Reed McMahon.

Shirley attended Hastings College where she met and later married Gene M. Aabel on March 27, 1948. Shirley dedicated her life to raising four children, nurturing friendships, and volunteering. She enjoyed knitting Christmas stockings for family, friends, and Hastings families as well as sweaters and hats for mission work.

An active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Shirley served as pre-school Sunday School teacher, youth group sponsor, first woman deacon, and elder. Her community involvement ranged from Cub Scout den mother to co-chair for Red Cross Bloodmobiles, board member for Hastings Public Library, and member of the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Shirley is survived by her four children: Nancy (Mike) Bragg, of Asheville, NC; Barbara Galvin of San Diego, CA; Doug (Betty) Aabel of Minneapolis, MN; and Sally Broderick of Tulsa, OK; as well as her seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Hastings Public Library Foundation or the Gene and Shirley Aabel Memorial Scholarship at
