Her parents were John C. and Charlotte Aaron. The family lived in southern Illinois in the 1870 census. In 1880, they lived in Saybrook, Illinois in McLean County, and Carrie was listed as being born in 1867. The family moved to Chenoa, where the father was quite involved in the community. He served as Commander of the GAR there along with other positions. He joined a newly formed association of "Chenoa Emigrants," who were thinking of moving to Nebraska and homesteading. Twenty men quickly joined the group and John Aaron was elected President in 1885.
By September, 1887, John Aaron was expelled from the GAR for "defrauding his comrades," and ended up in Nebraska, where he later died.
