Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. Ft Herman of Alaska was a Russian Orthodox Monk and missionary to Alaska. Little is known of St. Herman's life before his admission to the Vaalum Monastery. However, by age 16 he exhibited deep piety and entered the Monastery. There he studied under Abbot Nazarius. Several times he was offered ordination and once to become the abbot of the Monastery. However, Herman desired to be a simple Monk and live in solitude, study and prayer. For several years he resided in a personal Hermitage near the monastery. After Alaska was discovered by the Russians the Cazr desired to send a mission to these new lands. In 1794 with nine other Monks St. Herman arrived on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Gravesite Details
The relics of St. Herman were removed from the island and interred in the Cathedral following a fire in the chapel where they had been kept.
