Harlan Gerold Almen was born on March 17, 1937 in Grafton, ND, the son of Helmer and Tillie (Nelson) Almen. He attended school in Grafton and following school he moved to Dade County, FL to work clearing land and delivering machinery.
On October 17, 1957 Harlan was married to Shirley Damen-Ackerland in Grafton, ND. The couple moved to Florida where their daughter, Shirlan was born. Together they moved back to Grafton. While living there, Harlan also farmed in Red Lake Falls. They moved to the farm in Red Lake Falls permanently in 1971 and raised their children, Harlan W., Kimberly, and Steve. Harlan farmed, and owned and operated a trucking company until 2012 when his health started to fail.
He is survived by his fiancé, Judy; sons, Harlan W. "Chip" and Steven L.; grandchildren, Kathryn, Stacey and Kenneth; great-grandchildren, Blake, Kaina, Kason, and Carter; brother-in-law Glenn; nieces, Darlene and Angela; nephew Mark and many cousins and friends. Harlan is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Shirlan and Kimberly; grandsons, Nicholas Miller and Jason Gervais; great-granddaughter, Mya Miller; sisters, Mavis Monson and Shirley Wardinski; brother-in-law, A. Dennis Wardinski, and his nephew, Dennis J. Wardinski.
