Dr. Ralph Abele Dies;

Zanesville Ordained Pastor Rev. Dr. Ralph Christian Abele, 68, of St. Louis, former Zanesville resident, died Monday (April 24) when speaking at the Shannondale Community Center and Church near Galdden, Mo.

Rev. Dr. Abele had been under treatment for a heart ailment and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Rolla, Mo. He was ecumenical minister of social concerns for the Metropolitan Church Federation and former pastor of Holy Ghost United Church of Christ in St. Louis. He was at the Shannondale Center in the Ozarks for ceremonies in recognition of 33 years of service there by its pastor, Rev. Vincent Bucher. Born in Zanesville, he was a son of Christian L. and Emma M. Spoerl Abele. He attended Elmhurst College and graduated from Eden Theological Seminary in 1925. Rev. Dr. Abele received a bachelor of divinity degree from Oberlin Graduate School of Theology in 1931 and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Eden in 1950. Rev. Dr. Abele was ordained at old Pilgrim Evangelical United Church of Christ in Zanesville (now Immanuel United Church of Christ). In 1954, he was named recipient of the B'aai B'rith award for his work as president of the Conference on Religion and Race.

Surviving are his widow, the former Frieda Deuschle: two sons, Rev. Reinhold Abele, minister of Christian education at Pilgrim Congregational Church in St. Louis, and George Abele, of Flushing, N. Y.; one daughter. Mrs. Kathryn JoeHenbeck of Baltimore; two brothers, Edward F. Abele of Zanesville and Elmer H. Abele of Blue Rock; one sister, Mrs. Freda Wilson of Okeechobee. Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews in the Zanesville area. His first wife the former Mary Thornton, died in 1962.

Rev. Dr. Abele willed his body to the Washington University School of Medicine. Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Holy Ghost Church in St Louis, with the Rev. Dr. Walter Wagner, executive director of the Church federation, officiating.
