Roy grew up in Russell, KS and graduated from Russell High School. He then served his country as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a Bombardier during WWII. In JAN 1945, while serving in a B-17 (Flying Fortress) nicknamed "C'est La Guerre" assigned to the 729th Bomb Squadron, 452nd Bomb Group, Roy was shot down over Germany.

Severely damaged by flak during a mission against a target in Hamburg, Germany, "C'est La Guerre" headed for Sweden, but was forced to land at Guderott, near Suderbrarup, five miles SW of Kappeln, Germany. The War Department listed him and his crew mates as "Missing in Action", but LeRoy and the others actually became prisoners of war (POWs) of the Third Reich. They were liberated after 126 days upon the cessation of hostilities in Europe.

After military service, Roy resumed his studies at the University of Kansas and received his degree in Business.

He married Marjorie Cochran on October 28, 1945 in Fort Morgan, CO.

Roy, Margie and their daughter Beverly moved to Ness City, KS in 1948. This is where Roy started his career as a banker, eventually becoming President and CEO of the First State Bank of Ness City.
