Age 45, he enlisted on 4/23/1864, and was mustered into Captain Joseph F. Hottle's Company, Reserves, as a Private.

The 3rd Battalion Valley Reserves, Virginia, (also known as Augusta County Reserves) was organized August 9, 1864, with four companies, A to D. It appears to have been broken up in the fall of 1864, and the remnant assigned, under Captain Samuel McCune, to Company D (Chrisman's) Battalion Virginia Reserves.
