On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, God chose the perfect angel, Hunter Austin Abernathy. Born July 7, 2003, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Robert Vincent Abernathy and Sarah Frances Withers Abernathy.
Austin was very active in the Kid's Rock Program and the Student Ministries at Hyland Heights Baptist Church. He was also very active at Rustburg Middle School, where he played soccer, was in the Junior Beta Club and in the school band. Austin was also a member of the Boy Scouts, Troop 155, of Concord.

Austin was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Deborah Slusher and his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Collins.

In addition to his parents, Austin is survived by five siblings, Andrew Abernathy, Ryan Abernathy, Tristan Abernathy, Mya Abernathy and Skylar Abernathy, all of Lynchburg; maternal grandparents, Robert Withers and his wife Vicki of Richmond and Wesley Ogden of Amherst; paternal grandparents, Charles Abernathy and his wife Glenda of Rustburg and Fred Collins of Goode. Austin is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members.

A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2016, at Hyland Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Summy and the Rev. Carl Weiser officiating. Interment will follow at Cumbie Memorial Cemetery in Rustburg.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
