ABERNATHY, Mr. Alger Manson "Tinker," 90, of Henrico, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He retired from Export Leaf Tobacco Company, Commonwealth Propane and SunTrust Bank. He was a member of Broadus Church in Mechanicsville. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was such a gentle and humble soul, with a quick wit, strong faith, sharp mind and unmatched determination. To know him was to love him and he will be truly missed. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce W. Abernathy; parents, Alger M. Abernathy and Annie A. Keeton; and brother, Robert H. Abernathy. He is survived by his loving daughters, Ann Carol Scott (John), Sue Ellen Billups (Tom) and Cindy Lou Todd (Jeff); grandchildren, Ginny Frederick (David), Kevin Scott, Courtney Scott, Claire Lewis (Jeromy), Kelsey Billups, Holly Legg (Stephen), Cameron Todd, Carly Todd and Lacey Todd; and great-grandson, Harvey Lewis. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2016, with interment to follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Broadus Church Building Fund, 5351 Pole Green Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116 or the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, Va. 23060. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Commonwealth Assisted Living at the West End for all of their kindness and support.
