Gordon V. Aanerud, age 80 of Carlton, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, as a result of complications due to a farm tractor accident. He was born July 25, 1936 in Chokio, MN to Victor and Millie (Miller) Aanerud.

Gordon graduated from Waubun High School and received his teaching degree from Moorhead State Teachers College. He also attended Michigan Tech in Ann Arbor, MI; University of North Dakota in Grand Forks; and Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. Gordon was united in marriage to Donnis Haga on August 18, 1956 in Battle Lake, MN and started their life and family in Fargo, ND. They moved to Carlton County in 1965 and owned and operated a small farm specializing in raising Quarter Horses. Gordon was a teacher for 34 years, teaching science and math and retired from Carlton High School in 1992. Gordon was elected Fourth District Carlton County Commissioner in 1992, and served for 19 years, and chaired on a wide range of committees such as, NE Minnesota Office of Job Training, Arrowhead Regional Corrections, Governor’s Workforce Council, MN Workforce Council, US Department of Agriculture Resource Development Council, Carlton County Fair Board, and 4-H Projects, to name a few. Gordon was a former Boy Scout Master of Troop 172 for 14 years, and he shared his adventure and outdoor knowledge to many young men during that time. He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he also served on numerous committees and volunteered unselfishly to special causes. Gordon had faith, love and commitment to his family, friends and the community.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 47 years, Donnis; son, Tim in 1972; and a brother, Allan Aanerud.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Aanerud; children: Chris (Rebecca) Aanerud, Vicki (Donovan) Rostollan, and Brett (Louann) Aanerud; one brother, Ronald (Betty) Aanerud; one sister, Barbara (Mick) McCard; 10 grandchildren, Jacob, Timothy, and Emma Aanerud; Mathias, Joshua and Anna Rostollan; Brittany, Dakota, Tess, and Dustin Aanerud; 8 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
