Lillian Abbott Wells
December 9, 1918 – September 5, 2016

Lillian was born in West Point, Mississippi to Belle Barnes Abbott and Dr. Rush P. Abbott on December 9, 1918. She peacefully passed away on September 5, 2016 in Louisville, KY, where she lived most of her life.

Lillian attended Mississippi State College for Women. She moved with her first husband, Dr. James Luther Fuller, to Oklahoma City, where she graduated from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. She was a member of the Beta Alpha Phi (now Chi Omega) Sorority. Her first job was at the Daily Oklahoman newspaper before moving to Louisville, KY with her husband who was attending the University of Louisville Medical School. In 1940, she worked for the Louisville Courier-Journal. She also worked for the Kiwanis Club, sold Compton Encyclopedias, and worked as a substitute teacher. She and Dr. Fuller had two children together, James L. Fuller, Jr. and Nancy Belle Fuller. Dr. and Mrs. Fuller divorced.

Two years later, Lillian met the love of her life, Y. Peyton Wells, Sr. They married in 1958. He was a widower with two sons, Y. Peyton Wells III and Wayne H. Wells. Y. Peyton Wells, Sr. was later to become Chairman of the Board of Directors of Churchill Downs. He was a successful business owner of Peyton’s, Inc. and the Lepeda Corporation, and owned some race horses with brothers Lee and Darrell Wells, Sr.

Lillian and Peyton were involved with many community organizations. They belonged to the Broadway Baptist Church, the Louisville Boat Club, and the Pendennis Club. Lillian was an active member of many civic organizations, and served on the Boards of the Louisville Woman’s Club, American Red Cross, Visiting Nurse Association, the Deaf Oral School, PTA, and the Younger Women’s Club. She also performed volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, Home for the Incurables, and Kentucky Children’s Home. She loved to attend horse races, especially the Derby. She also loved to travel and arrange flowers, for which she won many ribbons in local shows. She was an avid tennis player, and played on her high school, college, and Boat Club teams. After her dear husband Peyton passed away in 1996, Lillian continued to live in Louisville and stayed involved with her civic organizations until her health deteriorated.

Lillian is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Y. Peyton Wells, Sr., her stepsons Y. Peyton Wells III and Wayne H. Wells, and her son, James Luther Fuller, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Belle Fuller and her husband James H. Borchardt of Los Angeles, CA, and grandson, Austin Grant of Sacramento, CA, and Scotty Fuller of Denver, CO. She is also survived by 5 step-grandchildren and other relatives, as well as her devoted employee of 58 years, Ms. Label Burks, and her son Theodies Burks.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lillian A. Wells will be held at a future date at the Broadway Baptist Church – 4000 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY. She will rest next to her husband in Resthaven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.
