Lucille Ableidinger Egeland Smith
Feb 18, 1921 – Oct 3, 2016

Lucille Margaret Ableidinger was born February 18, 1921 to Thomas and Mary 'Mayme' Radle Ableidinger near Karinen, Harding County, South Dakota. She was the third child of four in the family - the older twin by 15 minutes.

She attended Arnett Country School, Rhame High, and graduated from Bowman High School in 1939. Lucille completed Bismarck's Capital Commercial College business courses and headed to Seattle, then Los Angeles until WWII ended. In both cities, she was a USO Volunteer.

Lucille married Stanley J Egeland, a WWII veteran, on 16 Oct 1945 at St Agnes Catholic in Cox, Harding Co, South Dakota. The couple moved to Los Angeles until Lucille's parents needed help on their farm in 1947. They purchased their own place southeast of Bowman in 1954. Lightning destroyed the house before moving so they had to find another home.

Unbelievably, the building that once was the church at Cox where Lucille was baptized, then became a rectory where she dressed for her wedding now became the new family home.

While her husband farmed, Lucille worked for the Farmers Union, the State's Attorney's office, and became Deputy Auditor for Bowman County. Droughts and hail storms caused the family to move to Seattle in 1962. Lucille worked at Welder's Supply while Stanley worked at Isaacson's Iron Works where he was killed in an industrial accident July 7, 1964.

She now had the responsibility of a home on Seattle's Beacon Hill and five children. Lucille continued her career until 1971 when she married William J Smith and relocated to Auburn/Federal Way south of Seattle. She became the step-mother of 4 other children, John, Robert, Donald, and Stephanie. Bill Smith passed away in 2011, and Lucille moved to the Willows in Bremerton, an independent senior living complex.

Lucille loved to travel and read, plus an avid gardener. She was an excellent seamstress, crocheted afghans, collected seashells, and enjoyed teaching her grandchildren many crafts. In the mid-seventies, her passion turned to oil painting. She took several classes and continued the hobby until she lost most of her sight.

Her bones started degenerating, and she had multiple fractures in her spine and pelvic. Unfortunately, she was not able to rally back from her last fall and passed away on October 3, 2016 surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her children, Deanna and Lane Dowell of Bremerton WA, Stacy and Janet Egeland of Tacoma WA, Robert Grant and Suzanne Egeland of Kapaa HI, Tom Egeland of Kalaheo, HI, and Randy Egeland of Wailua HI, Grandchildren, Danny Egeland, Jessica and Imai Karratti, Ben Egeland, and Rachel Egeland, Great-Grandchildren, Anu and Po'o Karratti, Sanoe Stevenson-Egeland, and Kayla Birindelli, plus a host of nephews and nieces from the Ableidinger and Egeland families.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Tom and Mayme Ableidinger, her husband, Stanley Egeland, her second husband, William Smith, her brother Robert and Gloria Ableidinger, sister Ethel and Joe Geisler, and her twin sister Luella and Dick Noll, in-laws Leonard and Clara Egeland, Ruth and Rudy Vatne, Monte and Mary Egeland, Agnes and Elmer Angona, Curt and Tillie Egeland, Thelma and Raymond Kulseth, and Shirley (Joe) Stinchfield.

Lucille was a dedicated Roman Catholic and a member of Holy Trinity in Bremerton. Memorial Services were held on October 11, 2016 at Greenwood Memorial Park, Father Patrick Ritter presiding. She was buried next to her husband, Stanley Egeland, in Greenwood Cemetery, Renton Washington.
