Johanna Alwine Frenzel was born to Traugott and Christiana Frenzel in Görlitz, Silesian Province of the Kingdom of Prussia in the North German Confederation in what is now Germany. She was known to all as Alwine or Alna . From records of Caroline Alwine Swanson Bosworth Bunn - granddaughter: " Her given name was Johanna, as it appears on the Church Confirmation. She came to the United States with her parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters on a large freighter named 'Germania', which sailed from either Bremerhaven or Hamberg. They arrived in New York Harbor on May 23, 1872. They traveled by train to Nebraska City, NE arriving June 6, 1872, when she was 4 years old. It was a 12 or 14-day trip from New York City to Nebraska City. The eldest brother of the family, F W (Bill) Frenzel had come over 3 years earlier. During that time, he purchased a farm where he built a house and several out-buildings for the family. The farm was 11 ½ miles NW Of Nebraska City in Otoe County, NE. Alwine was confirmed in St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Otoe County, NE by Pastor Spriegel on 11th of April 1887, after she was married and 19 years old.
In 1884, Charles Adelman came and boarded with the Traugott Frenzel family while farming nearby. He boarded for 2 years at $2.50 a week and worked for the Frenzel's and where he met Alwine. They knew each other for 3 years before marriage. The Frenzel's had 3 daughters living at home. Charles said, "I got into a bad place and no escaping three women." Once when the thrashing crew was coming in for dinner, the different men and teams had a horse race on the way to the house. The wagons were bumping over rough ground and Charles' future father-in-law, and several other men were in the wagon box. Mr. Frenzel hung on the side of the wagon and puffed out his breath. He acted so frightened that when he got to the house, he told his family "He never again would ride with that crazy fellow, Edelman." Mr. Frenzel was a town boy and cabinet maker in Germany. Mr. Frenzel had a high German dialect while Charles had the German-Dutch dialect. They had a hard time understanding each other. Each thought the other was dumb in their conversation. (Notes from granddaughters Willa Swanson McAllister and Caroline Swanson Bunn)
On February 10, 1887, Alwine Frenzel and Charles Adelman (Edelman) were married. Charles was 33 years and 3 months of age. He was 14.42 years older than Alwine, shebeing 18 years and 10 months old.
The couple lived in Otoe County, Nebraska raising their oldest children until 1900, then moved to Rooks County Kansas. In 1903 they moved to Thomas County, Kansas, then in 1906 moved to El Paso County, Colorado. There they farmed and raised livestock until 1936 when they retired and moved to Calhan, CO. After the death of Charles, Alwine lived in Sharon Springs with her eldest daughter, Emma.
