Rev. Father Victor F. J. Aertker, O.F.M., came to America from Germany in 1869. He entered the Order of Friars Minor with the Sacred Heart Province in St. Louis, Missouri. After ordination to the priesthood, he served in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Nebraska. He came to California in 1885, first to the Mission Santa Barbara, and he then served at the old St. Turibius Mission near Kelsyville, and at St. Mary's Church in Lakeport. In 1893, he came to Los Angeles and was the pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he oversaw construction of a new church, completed in 1903. He then served at the St. Francis Mission in Cowlitz, Washington. From 1907 to 1910, he was the pastor of St. Elizabeth parish in Oakland, and in 1916 he was the pastor of St. Francis of Assisi parish in Sacramento. Fr. Victor spent his final years back at the Mission Santa Barbara, where he died at age 65. During his many years of ministry, he had been permitted to acquire considerable property in California and Arizona, all of which he left to St. Elizabeth's Church and the Franciscan friary in Oakland.
