ABERNATHY, Claude A., age 76, of Richmond, formerly of Alberta, Va., and son of the late Acree and Mary Abernathy, passed away after a well-fought battle with cancer Friday, November 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Gayle Abernathy; and daughter, Susan Gayle Abernathy. He is survived by his wife, Joan Abernathy; son, C. Ashley Abernathy Jr. (Mary Sam); grandchildren, Jonathan, Tori, Kelsey, Claudia, Logan; stepsons, Gary Haizlip (Barbara) and Eddie Haizlip (Tabitha); stepgrandchildren, Scott (Christi), Kelli, Tyler, Broden, Elias. He served two years in the U.S. Army and 20 years in the Virginia Army National Guard, retiring as Lt. Col. The family would like to thank Dr. David Trent and the Virginia Cancer Institute for the care and support. The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday (today), November 13, at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, Va. 23228. A graveside ceremony will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 14, at Kenbridge Heights Cemetery in Kenbridge, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
