OBITUARY:
Allie Fair Adams, 93, passed away Nov 5 at the Mineral Community Hospital Long Term Care Facility. Known locally as the Cat Lady, she cared for the many animals people abandoned on her property. She couldn't stand to see any animal or person in need and her compassion knew no bounds. Her open and giving nature enabled her to help many in this community either on the job at the Mineral Community Hospital and Nursing Home or in her private life. Yet few knew she was a gifted primitive artist who painted landscapes which she gave away freely. She had wanted to spend her retirement painting, but, instead she spent it as she had her entire life, caring for others.

Allie was born on April 20, 1923 in the Pennington Gap and Jonesville area of Virginia, the daughter of a coal miner. She came from a large family, and led a rough, picaresque life, spending time in Kentucky, New Mexico and New Hampshire.

Allie married Fred Adams in 1954, moving to Mineral County from New Hampshire in 1969. They were married 37 years, and had no children of their own. She tended her sister-in-law Alice as well as Alice's son, David, when they fell terminally ill. She also cared for many lost souls as they wandered through this valley.

Her "children" were the many cats, dogs, and skunks for whom she cared through the years. Among her siblings were Ora Lillian Adams (who married Fred's brother Robert); Ray Blair Myers, of Pennington Gap, Virginia; Arlena Ely; Lola Rice; and Susie Rice; Allie's neighbors and friends were Bobby Glenn and Julie Johnston. Allie was a special person with a sweet spirit, loved by all. She was always concerned about the welfare of her fellow residents at Mineral Community Nursing Home and will be missed by the staff as well as residents and visitors.

While her early years were shrouded in mystery, she shone like a beautiful beacon of love and compassion to all those who met her throughout her long life - she truly was a child of God. There will be a remembrance for Allie at 2:30 on Monday, November 21st in the Day Room at the Nursing Home.
