Mary "Polly" Starnes Austin Abernethy was the daughter of Jesse and Eleanor Watts Starnes, and she was born about 1837. She married John Jonas Austin about 1858 and had two children, Waitsel and Amanda. John Jonas Austin died during the Civil War in the service of the Confederacy. After his death she married John Abernethy, a much older man, on January 17, 1869 with whom she had no children. The date of her death is uncertain but occurred between 1880-1900 as she was listed in the 1880 U. S. Federal Census and did not appear in the 1900 U. S. Federal Census. She is probably buried in an unmarked grave near her parents in the cemetery of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
