He was born Aug. 22, 1958, in Ann Arbor, Mich., a son of Walter H. and Edna L. Abbott. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and enjoyed being an Eagle Scout. He was an avid West Coast swing dancer and belonged to several dance groups in Raleigh. He was preceded in death by a brother, William G. Abbott, in April 2006.
Along with his parents, he is survived by a son, Walter Glen Abbott; two brothers, Wray Abbott and his wife, Sharon, and Wayne Abbott and his wife, Pam; a sister-in-law, Terri Abbott, Bill's widow; a sister, Wendy Alexander and her husband, Peter; a half sister, Sonya Abbott and her husband, Bob; and numerous nieces, nephews, stepnieces and stepnephews.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. A Mass of resurrection will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at St. William of York Catholic Church, with Father David Meng officiating. Burial will follow in Stafford Memorial Park.
