Harold “Hal” D. Aberg, age 83, of Ripon, WI, went to be with his Lord on the afternoon of Monday, April 17, 2017, at Maplecrest Assisted Living in Ripon.

Harold was born October 1, 1933 in Saratoga, Iowa, the son of Martin and Julia (Citek) Aberg. He graduated high school in Cresco, Iowa, and later attended the University of WI, Madison, receiving a degree in social work.

On November 25, 1955 he married Elizabeth Farmer and from this marriage four children were born. He then remarried on August 10, 1974 to Greta Thompson Rens in Waupun at the First Reformed Church. Greta had been widowed and had two children.

Harold attended various churches during his lifetime. The most recent was Immanuel United Methodist Church in Ripon. His work career was with the WI Department of Corrections, working at Fox Lake Correctional Institution from which he retired in January of 1992.

He lead an active volunteer life with the Fire and Police Commission, American Legion Gretchel-Nelson Post #210 in Waupun, AARP, Masonic Lodge, Heritage Museum, Volkfest, Waupun Hospital Meals on Wheels and various positions in each Church he attended.

He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the USAF in March of 1956.

Harold and Greta enjoyed many things together, including many travels visiting family members across the United States, restoring their Victorian home and antique furniture. After living in Waupun for 30 years, Hal and Greta downsized and moved to Ripon. Harold became challenged for many years with Parkinson’s disease and later Dementia.

Harold is survived by his wife, Greta of Ripon; a son, Stephen (Deb) Aberg of Waupaca, WI; 3 daughters, Deborah (Chuck) Kelly of Merton, WI, Julia (Dan) Robison of Morgantown, WV, and Penny Aberg of Fox Lake, WI; siblings, Dorthy Wood of Tucson, AZ, Ronald Aberg of Hollywood, CA, and Gerald Aberg of Perry IA; 2 step-daughters, Sherri Darby of Neenah and Tami Rens of Green Lake; fourteen grandchildren, Amanda (Josh) Bartolotta, Melissa (Ryan) Ptacek, Kayla Kelly, Becca Kelly, Sophia Robison, Hannah Robison, Cory Gilgenbach, Tyler Gilgenbach, Nathaniel, Mariah, Benjamin, Naomi, Joseph and Cephas Aberg; 3 step-grandchildren, Tiffany McCauley, Matt McCauley and Samantha Darby; 6 great-grandchildren, Sadie, Brantley, and Reiley Gilgenbach, Oliver Ptacek, Austin Bartolotta and Lia Carpenter; 2 step great-grandchildren, Ella and Madilyn Glod;

He is preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Clarence Aberg, Eugene Aberg, Ruth Dunaman, Donald Aberg, Gladys Anderson, and Helen Kakac.

A visitation for Harold will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 401 W. Fond du Lac St., Ripon, WI, 54971.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, with Reverend Michael Morning officiating. Full military honors will follow. Inurnment will take place at Forest Mound Cemetery in Waupun at a later date.

Hal’s family would like to thank Maplecrest Assisted Living staff for their care and concern this past year. Also many thanks to Southern Care Hospice Services and their caring staff the past 3 months.
