He was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II. He was a retired partner of Abell Brothers Construction Company.
He was preceded in death by a son, Louis P. Jr., and a sister, Elizabeth Hillier.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Wertz Abell; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Gary Wheeler, Debbie and Tony Gregory; a son, William Randolph (Billy) Abell II; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Rudy Miller, Virginia and Frank Creasey; a brother and sister-in-law, William Randolph and Martha Abell; grandchildren, Tammy Burton, Diane Reid, Melanie Gregory, Justin Gregory, Jesse Abell, Nicholas Abell; great-grandson, Mitchell Abell.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. George Wesley Jones officiating. The family suggests memorials be made to the Vinton First Aid Crew. Family and friends will assemble at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1:15 p.m. Monday. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel after 9 a.m. Sunday.
