Mary Claire Abate (nee Sellers)

LEAGUE CITY - Mary Claire Abate (nee Sellers); died of cancer on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at her residence.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jim; sons Tony and Kevin; her mother Mary Sellers; sister Elizabeth Patton, numerous nieces and nephews and treasured friends.

She was born in Maryland on July 18,1949, and remained
there until moving to Texas in 1992.

In her 11 year battle with cancer, she was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society. She served as President of the Hartford County, MD Chapter of the ACS from 1990- 1992 and was Volunteer of the Year in 1991. In 1993 she helped re-establish the Bay Area Chapter of the ACS in Texas, serving as its president from 1993-1997. She was a founding member of the Silver Dollar Ball Advisory Board on which she served until her death.

When the Bay Area Chapter was annexed by the Houston Metro Board, she served as Bay Area Representative, a volunteer for Cancer Control and for Income Development. In 1998 she was a recipient of the ACS "Courage Award." From 1998-2000 she also served on the Board of the M.D. Anderson Patient Network.

In lieu of flowers it was her greatest wish that donations
be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2000,
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with service to begin at 7:00
p.m., at Crowder Funeral Home Chapel in Dickinson Interment
will be in Laurel, Maryland.
