Betty M. Carpenter, 80, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Saturday, July 3, with her family beside her.

Betty was born at home on July 24, 1923, in Plymouth, Ind. as the daughter of Grace (Crites) and William Eaton, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Donabelle Weiler, Geneieve Beckner, Rowena Leere and Mary Lou Abrams, along with her brothers, Charles, William, Floyd and Robert Eaton. On Dec. 20, 1942, in South Bend, she married Arthur Bruce Carpenter, who preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 2001.

Betty is survived by a son, Bruce Jr. (Carolyn) of South Bend; a daughter, Mary Nemeth of Mishawaka, Ind.; four grandchildren, Ken (Melinda) Carpenter, Shari Nemeth, Kevin Carpenter and Kelly Carpenter; along with two great-grandchildren, Baylee and Blake Carpenter; a sister, Doris Pajakowki; a nephew, David (Barbara) Warstler; and many other nieces and nephews who were special to her.

Betty was a giving and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She found good in everyone. Betty was an active member of the First Brethren Church of Ardmore for over 49 years. She loved to cook, oil paint, and entertain family and friends. She taught Sunday school for approximately 40 years, worked with girl scouts, Bible quiz teams, women's groups, fixed retirees' dinners, held home Bible studies and worked in Awana. Betty recently finished writing a book about her childhood memories.

Betty had a special group of friends who called themselves the "Lunch Bunch." Gerri Szczpiorski, Lois Jean Stoynoff, Ime Bourdon and Mary Dale would meet for lunch every Wednesday for over 30 years.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the First Brethren Church of Ardmore, with calling one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Brethren Church, 23370 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628; or to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
