Herman was the son of Thomas Jackson Abbott & Mary E. Fonda Abbott. He married Willie Guelda (nee Beckworth) Ponsell, prior to 1940. She was the daughter of John Wilson Beckworth & Allie Willow King Beckworth and the widow of John Thomas Ponsell, Jr. The couple's marriage ended in divorce.
He married Dorothy Belle (nee Anderson) Underwood on November 30, 1963 in Campbell County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Lige & Minnie Maupin Anderson and the former wife of John Thomas Underwood.

Harrodsburg (Spl.)-Services for Herman Joseph Abbott, 61, husband of a former Harrodsburg resident, will be conducted by Rev. J.E. Darter at 10 a.m. in the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home here. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery and friends may call at the funeral home.
Mr. Abbott, who was born in Brunswick, Ga., died Monday at 2:30 p.m. at his home, 31 W. High St., Lawrenceburg, Ind.
Survivors include his widow, Dorothy Anderson Abbott; a step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Lewis of Harrodsburg; two step-sons, John and Lige Underwood, both of Harrodsburg and four step-grandchildren.
