Louisa May Cheney, 87, passed away at her daughter’s home in Ririe, Idaho on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

May was born August 27, 1930 in Ucon, Idaho, a daughter of Joseph Lloyd Rasmussen and Dora Elizabeth Simmons Rasmussen. She graduated from Ucon High School as Valedictorian. She married her eternal sweetheart, Elmo David Cheney, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, May 25, 1948.

May enjoyed serving in the Primary with 8 to 10 year olds. She started her scouting experience with the 11 year old boy scouts, continuing to serve for over 50 years in the scouting program. She earned her Wood Badge Certification, received the Silver Beaver award, and was inducted into the Scouting Hall of Fame. She blazed nature trails at Krupp Scout Hollow, where she served for many years. She loved plants and taught the scouts which plants were edible.

She enjoyed oil painting, writing poetry, singing, sewing, cooking, canning, gardening, and crocheting doilies for the temple.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served with her husband for 17 years in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Survivors include six daughters and one son: Helen (Earl) Maurer of Lewiston, Idaho; Joan (Larry) Reeder of Melba, Idaho; Catherine Cheney of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Evan (Gisela) Cheney of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Carmen (Robert) Clark of Ririe, Idaho; Nina (Jon) Harris of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Luana Cheney of Rexburg, Idaho. She is also survived by four sisters and three brothers: Velma Metcalf of Mackay, Idaho; Carl (Joyce) Rasmussen of Kearns, Utah; Kenneth Rasmussen of Ogden, Utah; Macel Thomson of Menan, Idaho; Neil (LaVern) Rasmussen of Ucon, Idaho; Mary (Bob) Blanchard of Chubbuck, Idaho; and Connie (Ernie) Lee of Idaho Falls, Idaho. In addition, she is survived by 45 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren.

May was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three children: Sharon King, Ruth Ann Batt, and Laura Adams; and a sister: Bessie Van Lueven and brother: Robert Rasmussen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sunnydell Ward LDS Chapel, 201 West 8000 South, Rexburg, Idaho 83440. The family will visit with friends at the Sunnydell LDS Church, Friday, December 1, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery, in Archer, Idaho under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby.
