Coming from a large family, his aunt Murrel Gerrels helped him through his teens and encouraged him to go to college. He enlisted in the Army in May 1945 after graduating from Cherokee High School, in Cherokee, Oklahoma. He enrolled at Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma with many other service veterans who were resuming their education after WWII. He played football and basketball for the college. He also drove the bus as no one else had a chauffer's license. Melvin met Barbara Breford at Northwestern College. They married on August 13, 1949, at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. He attended Northwestern for another year. The moved to Eastern Colorado and farmed for two years before settling in Colorado Springs. He managed Oklahoma Testing Labs; one of their largest projects was soil engineering for the Air Force Academy. He started his own plumbing business, TMP, Inc.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, sons Marc and David. Melvin was preceded in death by his son Bruce in 1959.
Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 2pm at Memorial Gardens.
