Beverly M. Abbott, 84, a former Jacksonville resident died on Monday, April 9, 2007, at her son's residence in Laguna Vista, Texas, where she has lived since 1999. She was born April 19, 1922, in Rutland, Vermont, the daughter of Valdemar Gustafus and Myrle Nielsen Melen. She married Lester C. Abbott, Sr., on July 6, 1940 in Rutland, Vermont, and he preceded her in death in 1977.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Martin of Florissant, Mo. and Linda Hansen of Forks, Wash.; one son, Jay (wife, Diane) Abbott of Laguna Vista, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Philip Martin, Sandra Westover, Matthew Martin, Catherine Strobbe, Laura Mood, Wesley Abbott, Dennis Bowman, Scott Webber, Shane Webber, Luke Hansen, Megan Barton; twelve great-grandchildren; and one sister, Norma (husband, Henry) Bucior of Palmer, Mass. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Martin; and one brother, Edward Melen (surviving wife, Irene of Rutland, Vt.).

Beverly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and genuine friend to many. One of her many interests was knitting. Family members and dear friends treasure their afghans with the intricate pattern she knit from memory. Beverly was a devoted member of the Congregational Church, remained active in two Jacksonville Bridge Clubs for over 50 years, participated in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and with kindness delivered mail to Passavant Hospital patients for many years.
