Mona T. Abbas age 85 of Norwood Young America, MN passed away Saturday April 7, 2018 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Memorial service 1:00 PM Friday April 13, 2018 at the Peace Villa Community Room (308 Faxon Road North) in Norwood Young America, MN with Rev. Eric Aune as officiant. Gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment in the Gordon Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Osakis, MN.
Mona Rose Thompson was born February 15, 1933 in Lebanon, NH the daughter of Henry and Dorothy (Cunningham) Thompson. Growing up in Etna, NH she was the oldest of six children. Mona was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Hanover in Etna. She was a graduate of the Hanover High School.
On September 3, 1954 Mona was united in marriage with Arnold John Abbas Sr. at the First Baptist Church of Hanover in Etna. After a short period of living in Minnesota, the couple returned to New Hampshire and settled in Etna. Mona had worked as an operator for the Hanover and Concord telephone companies, and also in the library of the Bernice A. Ray School and the Hanover Town Library in Etna.
Mona and Arnold moved to Osakis, MN in 1982 where Mona worked as an operator for the Alexandria Phone Company. She later worked at the Osakis Memorial Home and in the library for the Osakis School District.
On Wednesday January 16, 2008 after 53 years of marriage Mona suffered the death of her husband Arnold Abbas Sr. She remained living in Osakis until she decided the need to be closer to family and moved to Peace Villa in Norwood Young America, MN.
Mona had a very strong faith and was very devoted to the Baptist and Methodist churches in which she belonged. She had served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years and would volunteer whenever needed. Mona was also a member of her community Birthday Club and Red Hat Society. Always thinking of others, Mona volunteered in recent years at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, MN and the Carver County Library in Norwood Young America.
Mona enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing Bingo, reading and time spent in a library. She loved to travel to visit family and looked forward to every family reunion. Mona also enjoyed theatre, music and the ocean.
Mona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who cherished every opportunity to be with family.
Mona is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Dorothy Thompson; husband Arnold Abbas Sr.; brother David Thompson; sisters Patricia Belko, Evelyn Roy, brothers–in-law Ellsworth Tupper, Robert Butterfield and Phillip Roy.
Mona is survived by her loving family: son and daughter-in-law Arnold and Holly Abbas Jr. of York, PA; daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Keith Goodwin of Quechee, VT, Kathleen and David McDonald of Norwood Young America, MN; grandchildren and their spouses Arnold and Leanne Abbas III, Clifton and Jennifer Abbas, Nicholas Abbas, Gerren and Shauni Goodwin, Danielle and Devin McCartt, Kaitlyn McDonald; great grandchildren Aiden, Cody, Sarah and Sage; sisters and brother-in-law Joanne Tupper and Marilyn Lacoss; sisters-in-laws Marjorie Thompson, Deloris Butterfield and Eunice Risberg; brothers-in-law Andrew Belko, Harold Risberg and Dennis Lacoss; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Donations in her name to be sent to the following places: Peace Villa Foundation, Carver County Library System, and Camp Odayin.
