Delores (Abbey) Reuer was born May 27, 1937. Her parents were Harold and Leone Abbey. Shortly after she was born there was a cloud burst and her mom went out to get the wash off the line. Her brother Darrell took her outside to see it rain because he thought she might not get to see it rain again. She lived in a farmhouse near Regent, ND. Grandma Abbey lived with us as we grew up. My sister (Kathy) and I started country school in 1944. World War II was still on at that time; tires and gas were being rationed for the war effort. Mom made both of our dresses from flour sacks. The school was just a mile and a half from our house. During the cold weather we went to school either by car, horse and wagon, or bobsled. My brother (Darrell) took us a lot of the time. The last few years we went further away, so our neighbors drove us with their Jeep. Five girls and my dad piled into the cab of that old pickup. In the late 50’s, we received electricity. Before that time, we had kerosene for light and wood for heat. My brother left for the Korean War the last year of elementary school. Delores and her sister started high school in Mott, ND. They went to school in a bus that was a wooden box on the back of a truck with no heat. Delores graduated in 1956, attended Bismarck State College and took up business for one year. Then she went back home and provided daycare. In 1961, her mom became sick and passed away from cancer.

In 1961, Delores and her Dad moved to Bismarck. Delores worked as a cashier at Buy Rite grocery store and a baker at the Annunciation Priory at the University of Mary. In 1969 she married Reinhold Reuer and moved to his farm south of Tappen, ND. They were grain farmers and had stock cows. On June 9, 1970, their daughter LaVone Karen was born, followed by Julie Ann, on January 28, 1974. In later years they milked cows and range cattle. In October of 1989, her father (Harold) passed away from cancer. In 1997 they moved to Steele, ND where Delores worked in the kitchen at the Senior Center. In 2009, she was diagnosed with cancer. In July of 2010 she moved to the Terrace in Bismarck and joined her husband. In May of 2017, she moved to St. Gabriel’s.

Delores enjoyed spending time gardening, coloring, quilting, reading and spending time with her family and friends. Delores had a gracious and loving heart and always made you feel welcome in her home.

She is survived by her husband, Reinhold Reuer; daughter LaVone (Eb) Harnisch of Hebron, ND; Julie Johnson of Mandan, ND. Grandchildren, Richard Harnisch, Monte Johnson, and Abbey Harnisch. Sister, Kathy (Simon) Bosch of Bismarck, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Leone Abbey; brother Darrell; and sister-in-law, Lorna Abbey.
