Simone Ines Paulette Marie (nee Thomas) Aakre, 88, passed away peacefully on the morning of Nov. 27 in Forest Grove, Ore., from natural causes.

A memorial service will be held at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Conrad at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31. Burial of her ashes will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Conrad.

Simone was born on Aug. 5, 1925, in Meuthe-et-Moiselle, France, the daughter of Pierre and Lucille Thomas. She met and married Theodore (Ted) Gilbert Aakre, Conrad, during his service in World War II.

In 1945, they returned from France to start their family in Conrad. Ted was a carpet layer, farmer and rancher. Simone worked at the JC Penney store in Conrad for three decades, beginning in the 1960s. She enjoyed sports, and was an avid bowler, participating on womens’ league teams. She was a skilled knitter and created many baby blankets and booties for friends and family.

Simone is survived by her brother, Pierre Thomas, Blainville/L’eau, France; her sister, Yvette Fortunat, Luneville, France; and her three daughters: Beatrice (Bea) Simone Fisher of Cornelius, Ore.; Mary Ann Paulette Eklund and her husband John of Winter Garden, Fla.; and Pamela Sue Wright of Silver Spring, Md.; her three grandchildren: Heather Sabrina Fisher, and her husband Rob Miller of Wilsonville, Ore.; Jason Fisher of Portland, Ore., and Caitlin Amanda Wright of Silver Spring, Md.; and one great-granddaughter, Hailey Paige Miller.

She was preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Pierre (Tony) Aakre, whose passing in 1963 caused her to carry a broken heart for the rest of her life; and by her husband, Ted, who passed away in 1997. She was a spirited, complicated woman, who always let her family know how very much she loved them.--The Independent-Observer (Conrad, MT)
