Katherine Treu Aarthun, a former resident of Toledo, who later lived in Perrysburg, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, of congestive heart failure at her home in Severn, MD. Her husband of 68 years, Jergen, and her oldest daughter, Julie Black, were at her side. She was 89.
Katherine's father, Max R.H. Treu, along with Leo Munch, founded the Treu House of Munch - a distributor of Anheuser Busch and Stroh beers throughout Toledo and Northwestern Ohio.
Katherine was born on June 18, 1921, in Redwood Falls, MN, and graduated from Hamlin University in St. Paul. She married Jergen Aarthun during World War II and lived in California, Minnesota and North Dakota, briefly, before settling down in Perrysburg to raise a family. Jergen Aarthun was a vice president at the Treu House of Munch Wholesale Beverage Distributors for many years before the couple retired to Sarasota, FL.
During her time in Toledo, Katherine volunteered at The Toledo Hospital and was an active member at Asbury Methodist Church on Door Street. She enjoyed golf, volunteering at local hospitals, reading romantic fiction ("Castle" novels) and was especially proud of raising four devoted children. Her friends, family and people whom she met in everyday life enjoyed her great sense of humor, and she considered this ability to be as important as any of her other talents.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Julie, she is survived by daughter, Jane; and sons, Steven and Jeffrey. Her grandchildren, Amy, Andrew, Kathryn, Stefanie and Sarah, and two great grandchildren also survive her. A memorial service was held Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glen Burnie, MD.
