Carl was the youngest of three children born to John Ben Benson, Sr. and Tatiana Dediukhin Benson.

The family lived at Chignik, where Carl's father was a fisherman, and an excellent carpenter and mechanic. Carl's father was a Swedish immigrant who had stowed away to get to America, according to page 1 of the book: God Flies Benny's Flag. Carl's mother was born to a Russian man and Aleut woman. The family was happy and doing well when Tatiana got pneumonia and died in 1917.

John searched the village to find help to care for his children with no luck. Other families also had sustained illness and death in recent months.

John brought the two youngest, Ben Jr. and Carl, to the Unalaska Jesse Lee Home, where they lived with other children whose parents couldn't care for them. The home closed and moved to Seward, where the two brothers lived until completing school.
Carl and Ben both helped their father fish, trap fox and other enterprises Ben Sr. had lined up. They enjoyed their years with their father, having missed him greatly during their Jesse Lee years.

Carl married an Aleut girl, Rose Anderson from the same village, Chignik in 1938. She was 15 and he was 23. The couple had ten children.

Carl died at the age of 49, at Chignik Lagoon June 16, 1965 and is buried at the village cemetery. His brother Benny is buried at Kodiak City Cemetery, UAS Plot US 3511, Grove #198,
