He was born in Telfair County, Georgia, son of the late Tom Bowen and Addie Collins Bowen.
Johnny graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1962. After graduation he was in the Army National Guard. Johnny was a graduate of South Georgia College in Douglas, Georgia and a graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
Upon graduation, he was a chemist at BSAF Wyndott in Tucker, Georgia.
In 1973, he went back home to Fitzgerald to work at Seaboard Coastline Railroad as a clerk. In 1989, he transferred to CSX Railroad in crew management in Jacksonville, Florida. He retired in 2004. He was previously a member of Salem Baptist Church in Rochelle, Georgia where he sang in a church quartet. He was a member and Head Usher of Westside Family Worship Center of Jacksonville.
Johnny loved watching Georgia Bulldog football, playing cards, Sudoku , crossword puzzles and traveling. He also loved his family, God and his church family. He was an avid golfer and also a member of the Masonic Lodge # 353.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Bowen. His sisters, Lavern (Bill) Beck and Inez Achord.
He leaves behind his daughters, Elaine Bowen, Stephanie (Christian) McCrocklin, and Renee (Shawn) Nabywaniec. Grandchildren, Griffin Bowen, Brittany Bowen, Hunter McCrocklin, and Kyle Nabywaniec. Sisters, Loraine Hurt and Gail (Sammy) Howell.
Memorial Service will be held at Westside Family Worship Center on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 11:00AM with Preacher Jim Wilder officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald, Georgia on November 18, 2018 at 2:00pm with Preacher Tommy Land, Jr. officiating.
