Born the 4th of 11 children on July 29, 1914, in Greenwood, Mississippi to the late Preston and Eliza Bryant. She is known as “The Little Lady with a Big Voice” due to the fact that she was about 3 feet tall and had a voice that made your crooked roads straight and your soul jump for joy.

Sammie sung and traveled with various groups like The Famous Ward Singers, The Davis Sisters of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Rev. James Cleveland.

She later left Mississippi and relocated to Detroit, Michigan where she became a member of New Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. C.L. Franklin, where she was many of the featured soloists of New Bethel and was also a featured soloist on his Gospel Caravan tours. She is known for her many solos “Angels Keep Watching”, “Sending up My Timber”, “How Much We Can Bear”, “There Will Come a Time”, “Walk with Me” and several other solos.

She has a daughter, Lucinda. Sister Sammie Bryant was a joy and inspiration but her work for Jesus Christ came to a close on Tuesday May 6, 1980 when she went from labor to reward.
