DOROTHY VIRGINIA BOWERS - A kind and generous spirit, devoted to her family and her community, passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 21, 2016 in Tucson, Arizona.

Dorothy was born August 29, 1919 near Unionville, Missouri to Benjamin and Anna Thompson and grew up there and in Kalispell, Montana.

She attended business school, and then worked, in Spokane, Washington, where she met the love of her life, Gerald Frank Bowers. They were married in 1944, just before Jerry shipped out to the European theater of WWII. Upon Jerry’s return, they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Jerry completed his studies in geology and where daughter Terry was born. Afterward they moved to Casper, Wyoming, where daughter Sue was born.

They then embarked upon a great adventure, spending six years in Spain, where Jerry explored for petroleum and the family gained lifelong memories. After Spain, the Bowers lived in Dallas and then McKinney, Texas, where they bought and operated a printing shop.

Dorothy and Jerry retired in Green Valley, Arizona in 1986, where they enjoyed a wonderful retirement near their granddaughters with whom Dorothy had a wonderful relationship, and where they enjoyed the company of the most interesting and accomplished people imaginable. Until moving into Atria La Campana del Rio retirement facility in Tucson in 2012, Dorothy was active in the women’s organization P.E.O. and St. Francis-in-the Valley Episcopal Church in Green Valley.

Jerry predeceased Dorothy in 2010. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Bill Thompson and sister Helen Miller.

Dorothy is survived by sister Betty Aadsen, daughters Terry Enfield (Terry Jackson) of Tucson and Sue Therrell (Alex Mamontoff) of Houston, Texas; granddaughters Dana Bloch (Ethan) and Anna Jackson; and great-granddaughter Charlie Virginia Jean Bloch, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to the staff and management of Atria La Campana del Rio, whose kindness meant much to Dorothy and her family during her last years, to the kind staff at Sabino Canyon Rehabilitation & Care Center, and to St. Francis-in-the-Valley, where Dorothy and Jerry found spiritual guidance and true friendship.

A memorial service will be held at St. Francis in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 600 South La Canada Drive, Green Valley, Arizona, on June 10, 2016 at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or to the charity of your choice.
