The experiences and observations of our early life impress upon our minds that fact that death is inevitable. Of all the beautiful things in life, the most beautiful is character. He whom we memorialize at this time, possessed a beautiful character and lived a spiritual life.

Earnest James Horton (“Cut”) was born February 25, 1940 in Huntsville Alabama, the eldest son of seven children to Ovoy Horton, Sr. and Emma Lankford Horton. Two siblings, Earl Calvin Horton and Aillean Horton Abercrombie preceded him in death. At an early age, Earnest joined Center Grove Methodist Church where his parents and family were long time members. He served faithfully in many capacities until his health deteriorated. His love for his church was demonstrated by his participation in the church choirs, as a member of the Trustee Board, on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, as a member of the Administrative Council, as a member of the United Methodist Men, and several other committees of the church.

He attended William Hooper Councill Elementary and High School in Huntsville, AL and graduated in 1958. After graduating high school, he attended Knoxville College. In 1962, he joined the United States Army. Following his tour of duty in the army, he continued his education by enrolling at Alabama A & M University in 1965. While attending A &M, he was a player for the Mighty Bulldogs under the leadership of Coach Louis Crews. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in History and a Master’s of Arts in Education Administration degree.

From an early age, he was a person who always grabbed life by the horns. His desire to excel guided his personal and professional life. In 1965, he met the love of his life, Wilhelmina Joyce Walker. To this union two children were born, Reginald and Quentin. His work ethic was one of the valuable lessons he imparted to his sons. He was a loving husband and good provider; he expected his sons to understand and appreciate what it took to be able to provide the necessities of life. He was strong on how important education was and the benefit it would provide in the future. He had a very close and protective relationship with his siblings. He loved being involved in events with family and friends which included family gatherings, social organizations, playing golf, attending A& M football and basketball games.

Upon graduation from college, Earnest’s first job was at Wiley Laboratories. He later became an instructor at Lee High School. After several years of teaching, he became the principal of West Huntsville Elementary School for 25 years. He retired from Huntsville City Schools in 2000, giving him a total of 31 years with the school system.

Earnest was active in many professional and community organizations. His affiliations included; Xi Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Alabama A & M Booster’s Club, Masonic Lodge #6, Fraternal Club of Brotherhood, President of the William H. Councill Alumni Association, a member of NAACP, National Education Association, and Alabama Education Association, Alabama Bulldog Club and Athletic Boosters Club, to name a few. He received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career as an educator and his involvement in the community.

Earnest was passionate about the love for his family especially his children, grandchildren and siblings. He leaves to cherish his remarkable memories, his two sons: Reginald (Jennifer) and Quentin; one daughter, TiaWanda Walker; grandchildren: Broche, Ashley, DeVaughn and Cayden Anderson, Taran Walker and Terry Parks; sisters: Geraldine (Rufus) Taylor, Huntsville, AL; Annie Horton, Huntsville, AL, Sharon Horton Steele, Huntsville, AL; brother, Ovoy Horton, Jr., Huntsville, AL; brother-in-law, Charles Abercrombie, Fairfax, VA; sister–n-law, Gwendolyn Walker, Montgomery, AL; brother-in-law, Langston (Cynthia) Walker, Atlanta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great grandchildren, friends, and a dedicated caregiver, Paulette Hughes.
