Betty Jane Flanagan was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Veblen, S.D., to Ole and Alice (LaCroix) Borgen. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Custer, S.D.

Her childhood was spent with many loving family members and special friends. As a young lady, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher and touched the lives of many students.

In 1955, she married the love of her life, Glenn O. Flanagan. They had one daughter, Glenda. Betty was involved in Eastern Star for over 70 years, Job’s Daughters, PEO, Custer Community Church and Gold Discovery Days.

She enjoyed spending time listening to her husband play guitar. She had many good times with her family and neighbors playing cards, Yahtzee and Bingo. Betty always made get-togethers extra special and she took great pride in her home and caring for her family. Betty said she didn’t love cooking, but her famous potato salad, sugar cookies and brownies said otherwise and her talent in the kitchen was enjoyed by many. Her generosity and warmth made all who knew her feel treasured.

Camping and road trips with their three granddaughters were a highlight of many summers. The Black Hills of South Dakota were home, but she and Glenn also enjoyed several sunny winters in Arizona.

She was blessed to have close relationships with all six of her great-grandchildren. They kept her smiling especially after she lost her husband, Glenn, in 2008, after 54 years of marriage.

Betty died May 12, 2018, in her hometown of Custer. She was 92.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Marble (Mable), William (Jenny), Norman (Helen) and Odean; and sisters, Nora (Bert) and Florence (Harold).

Betty is survived by her daughter, Glenda (Kevin) Jenniges of Custer; granddaughters, Ellen (Matt) Lewison, and Kara (Jeff) Bradeen, both of Custer, and Emily (Cody) Asher of Pierre, S.D.; great-grandchildren Quinn and Maggie Lewison, Owen and Molly Jane Bradeen, and Hank and Kevin (KC) Asher; sisters-in-law, Becky Cooper and Evelyn Flanagan; brother-in-law, Joe Cook; and several nieces and nephews.

Private family services were May 15.
