John William enlisted in the 123rd IL Infantry in August, 1862 as a private. He was mustered out as a sergeant in June 1865. In May 1863 the 123rd was assigned to Col. John T. Wilder's "Lightning Brigade." They fought at Hoover's Gap near Murfreesboro TN and played a crucial roll in the battle of Chicamauga. In 1865 the regiment,as part of General James Wilson's raid through AL, led the attack on Selma, AL.
