Catharine Pauline Amy, 91, of Julesburg, CO passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in Julesburg. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the United Methodist Church of Julesburg at 10:30 A.M.

Catharine's journey began and ended in Julesburg, with numerous homes, near and far, in between. Eunice (Hansen) and Bertram Achenbach welcomed their only child into the world on March 6, 1925. She missed having siblings, but was especially close to cousins Jack (Paul) and Walter Davis, with whom she spent most of her childhood holidays.

She met her future husband, Bob, when he tripped her in Algebra class in high school. She was thrilled when he asked her out, and they were sweethearts ever after. After graduation, Bob served in the military while she studied first at the University of Colorado, then at Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Chicago. They were married on September 17, 1947 and moved to Boulder so Bob could study at CU on the GI Bill. They lived in a Vetsville Quonset Hut and welcomed their first two children, Christine and Edward. Cathy worked on campus, and received her "PHT" (Putting Hubby Through) degree when he received his.

Bob's first job took them to Ft. Morgan, then back to Julesburg, where they welcomed Susan and Joan into the family. Cathy did secretarial work, taught piano and was very involved in her childrens activities, including Brownie and Cub Scouts, Sunday school, PTA, and as a church camp counselor where she earned the moniker "Mother Amy." A talented pianist, she accompanied at church and loved playing duets with friends. Her perfect pitch made practicing at home intimidating for her children, as she would yell the correct note ("C-Sharp!") from upstairs when they messed up.

The next stage of their lives began when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1965, then to Mexico City a year later, for what would turn out to be 16 adventurous years living abroad, including Puerto Rico, Hong Kong and Japan. Her family never ceased to be amazed at how easily she packed up the entire household and moved it across continents. She loved learning about new places, was a gracious hostess to neighbors, co-workers and ambassadors, and volunteered for myriad organizations, such as Father Wasson's Orphanage and the ProCiegos blind association in Mexico, church activities in Puerto Rico, Woman's Club in Tokyo and charity dragon boat races in Hong Kong.

Finally yearning to set down roots, they moved to New York in 1977, then Connecticut, where they built their dream house in New Fairfield. Bob got her the baby grand piano she'd always wanted. Sadly, Bob died unexpectedly in 1984, but Cathy knew where she wanted to go next: the home she grew up in in Julesburg, and the close-knit community she had loved her entire life. She was soon involved and contributing again, including the hospital and library boards, Woman's Club, UMW, Methodist Church choir and pianist, P.E.O., Garden Club, working at the Welcome Center or teaching kids to read. The word "no" rarely crossed her lips, and she taught her children, leading by example. A highlight and great honor for her was being chosen to represent her beloved community by carrying the Olympic torch in 1996.

Catharine is survived by her loving family: Chris (Don) Peterson, Susan (Jim) Ziegler Amy, Joan Amy, grandchildren Dani (Ben) Fowler, Cecelia Guerrie, Harly (Mandi) Amy, Bobbi (Jeff) Tophoj and great-grandchildren Kaleb & Emily Fowler, and Alayna Amy. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Ed, and parents Bert and Eunice Achenbach.
