Verlon Abbott, 80 of Monroe, Nebraska died Monday, November 22, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, November 27, 11:00 A.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Swanson Post 322 of Monroe. Visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. with a 10:45 A.M. family prayer service all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggest to the family choice.

Verlon "Gene" Abbott was born March 21, 1924 on a farm near Rising City, Nebraska to Charles and Gladys (Holderness) Abbott. He graduated from Rising City High School in 1943. After graduation, Verlon entered the US Army, serving during WWII from June 10, 1943 to January 31, 1946. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Verlon worked in Omaha and Monroe as a carpenter. He attended a Refrigeration Tech School in Omaha. He was united in marriage to Joan Winget on July 6, 1947 in Central City, Nebraska.

In 1954, Verlon moved the family to California. He worked as a supervisor for the Moran Company for several years. He also was a carpenter supervisor on many large commercial jobs while living in California. He was a member of the Anza Valley, California VFW and the American Legion. In 1989 Verlon retired to Bullhead City, Arizona. He moved back to Monroe to live with his daughter in 2001. He enjoyed woodworking and building patio's.
