Arch Bryant Downing 84, passed away December 5th, 2019 after a long illness. He was born January 9th, 1935 in Allen, Oklahoma. Early in his childhood his family moved to a farm just north of a small town in Kansas called Stafford. This is where he spent his childhood. He started school in a one room schoolhouse that he claimed he had to walk 2 miles to every day, uphill both ways. He loved to hunt and fish and did some trapping. He developed a love for honky-tonk, ragtime music and became quite the piano player. He graduated high school in 1953 from Hudson high school with a graduating class of 16. After high school he enlisted and spent 2 years in the Army at the end of the Korean War. Returning from the Army he moved to Oklahoma, married, had two sons Robert Scott Downing and Steven Bryant Downing. He joined the Oklahoma City Police Department and spent 10 years before leaving to become a teacher in Oklahoma City public schools after graduating with a Master’s degree from Oklahoma City University. He was a driver’s education teacher for many years at Classen High School before finishing his teaching career at Douglass High School. Arch served in the Air National Guard for 24 years before he retired as the First Sergeant of the 219 E.I. Squadron. In 1976 he started Sooner Security, his own security and private investigations business which he operated for 43 years. He spent many years caring for his handicapped son Robert Scott Downing who preceded him in death on March 18th, 2012. He loved to spend time with his family at the lake or pheasant hunting in Kansas with family and friends. He especially loved spending time with his twin grandsons, Scott Bryant Downing of Edmond and Michael Lee Downing of Oklahoma City. Survivors include one son Steven Bryant Downing of Edmond, Oklahoma and two grandsons, Michael Lee Downing of Oklahoma City and Scott Bryant Downing of Edmond, Oklahoma. He leaves behind nieces and a nephew who lovingly called him Uncle Bryant and will miss him dearly. He impacted many lives and will be missed by family and friends who have many fond memories of their time with him. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 12th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel with interment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
