Albert Engel was born on April 2, 1902 at Fere-Champenoise I, (settlement) Bessarabia (state) and Akkerman (similar to county), South Russia of Germans from Russia descent. His parents were Christian Wilhelm Engel and Carolina (Finkbeiner) Engel. In the fall of 1902, Albert and his family immigrated to the United States only to be turned away at Ellis Island thus going into Canada and crossing the border into North Dakota in the winter time. They spent the winter with relatives who had come to Harvey ND two years before them. In the spring of 1903, Albert and his family started out for their homestead land, located six miles northwest of Garrison, ND in McLean County. He received his education at a one room schoolhouse Northeast of Garrison. He graduated in 1917 and then went to St. Paul Minnesota to attend seminary school. He attended school there in 1917-1918, and illness kept him from continuing. On January 18th, 1928, Albert married Emeila Henne of Coleharbor. They farmed in the Garrison area and raised six children (Leonard (Bud), Arlene Jackson, Gladys Winn, Gloria Patterson, James (Jim) Engel, and Linda Ash. Albert died on November 24, 1988, in Garrison, North Dakota. He was survived by Leonard, James, Gladys, Gloria and Linda and their families including many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Arlene, infant sons Arnold and Ervin, and grandson Larry Engel.
