Essie was the son of Essie Bill Abbott Sr and Isabelle Abbott. He was educated in the Macon County School System and was a graduate of D.F. Douglass High School in Montezuma, Georgia. He Enlisted in the U.S. Marines and received his Honorable Discharge. Upon returning home, he worked in construction and was a self employed carpenter.
