Obituary
Dorothy Sankey Nelson left this world on May 1, 2011. Dorothy was born to David Dingenus Sinke (Sankey) and Adrianna (Jennie) Van Eck Sankey. She was a first generation American born in Chandler, Minnesota on September 9, 1924.

Mom was an extremely important person in her children's lives and the void will be very hard to fill. Our mother lived a very interesting life. At the age of 18 she moved to California during WWII, settled in Long Beach where she lived with her sisters. She worked as one of the original Rosie the Riveters and she was one of the first female certified master welders. During this time she met her husband Wayne Nelson. They moved to the central valley where they raised their 8 children.

While raising her children, she was many things; Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout Leader, Camp Fire Girls leader, room mother many times, involved with PTA where she was awarded Woman of the Year for her service to children by the Tulare City Schools, and Parent Boosters. She was a 'mother' to many other children whom she raised and a role model too.

At age 45, she went back to school, got her nurses license and worked for twenty plus years, mainly in geriatric nursing.

She loved politics, and was a member of the Republican Women's Organization. She was a docent at the Tulare's Historical Museum, a member of the Sons of Norway Lodge with her husband Wayne and the International Order of Foresters.

Dorothy was a very active member of the First Congregational Church in Tulare for over 50 years. Our mom read the bible everyday and had God as her foundation.

She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, every holiday was a big celebration. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, embroidery, gardening, traveling, was a patron of the arts, debating religion and politics, and making her special pomegranate jelly.

She was very candid about her opinions, but a pillar of strength. She was extremely proud of her entire family and was always supportive of us throughout our own life's challenges.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Dorothy was proceeded in death by her husband Wayne, her beloved son Michael, son in law Bob Stevens, and grandson Eric Faulk, brother Bill Sankey, sister Lavina (Nina) Kemp, brother in laws Charles Aardema , Tony Kooiman, Jim Kemp, Clarence (Bo) Nelson and Larry Cotta.

Services will be Wednesday May 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 220 W. Tulare Ave., Tulare, CA 93274.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Congregational Church or the Tulare Historical Society, 444 W. Tulare Ave., Tulare, CA 93274.
