His Division participated in the amphibious assault against the Imperial Japanese Army Forces on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll in the Battle of Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, code name OPERATION GALVANIC. He was Killed In Action on November 21, 1943 on the second day of the invasion.
He was originally buried in the Lone Palm cemetery on Betio Island. After the war, his remains were returned to his family and is buried in St Roch Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.
He had just turned 19 years old three months before his death.
